BiggestLoser.com: What was the biggest obstacle you overcame to lose the weight?
Danni: The biggest obstacle for me was mental. Sure, the physical and nutritional changes were hard, but really digging deep into the "why am I the way that I am" was truly eye opening. When Jillian point blank asked me, "Why are you fat?" it really made me question myself and expose some demons that I wasn't willing to face in the past. Once exposed however, Jillian and I were able to come up with the tools to overcome them. Are all my demons gone? Certainly not, but now I am more comfortable with myself, and I have the awareness and the ability to tackle those demons head on.
BiggestLoser.com: How will you maintain your new weight and healthy lifestyle?
Danni: I am going to go Forest Gump on the nation! I will be running in the Chicago Shamrock Shuffle in April and the Rock n' Roll Half Marathon in July and hitting my first marathon in October. Running has become a huge part of my life, and I think running in as many locations as possible will spread my "Start 2 Fitness" motto and really get the Challenge America Movement going.
BiggestLoser.com: What advice would you give The Biggest Loser At Home members?
Danni: The hardest part for me was getting started. First, make your home a safe zone. Get rid of all those "temptation" foods. I don't need to tell you what they are, you know. We all have weak moments, but if these foods aren't around to splurge on, you can't give in, right? Second, surround yourself around the people who will set you up for success. Use friends and family on your workouts. Walk together. Just get moving! This will be a great start!
BiggestLoser.com: What’s your biggest motivation for staying fit?
Danni: My biggest motivation started in February of 2012, when my father was rushed to the emergency room with a fluid buildup over his heart and lungs. My father had heart problems his whole life, but his weight didn't help. There was a moment when I thought I was going to lose my dad. By some miracle, he had the strength to push beyond the medical odds and was able to turn it all around. But this was my "moment." We spent my father's 50th birthday in the hospital, and all I could think was, “I don't want the age of 50 to be near the end of my life, I want it to be the halfway point.” If I didn't change, I could end up like my father, lying in a hospital bed praying for things to turn around. Like I said, it was some miracle that my father recovered. Currently he is up and moving toward a healthier lifestyle!
Now, my biggest moment is the feeling I have right this very moment. People say, "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels," and although I don't like the word "skinny," the meaning behind it means so much to me. My newest mantra is from fitness motivator Bonnie Pfiester: "I will beat her. I will train harder. I will eat cleaner. I know her weakness. I know her strengths. I've lost to her before, but not this time. She is going down. I have the advantage because I know her well. She is the old me."
BiggestLoser.com: What surprised you about this process?
Danni: That I could actually do it! For the first time I am not saying, "Why me?" I am saying, "Why NOT me?" Each week I felt I was getting stronger and stronger, like nothing could take me down. Now I know how it feels to fight and fight and win. That is the most amazing feeling, knowing that I can do it!
BiggestLoser.com: What's the biggest change you found going back home after losing the weight?
Danni: That maintenance mode is real! Now that I am at my goal weight, I have more flexibility with my diet, and 90 minutes of workout a day is enough. I have continued to eat all organic foods and I try at best to stay gluten free. These are the two things that I really learned help me maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep my energy high. Wow! I did it and I have a plan to keep it off!
